Graduate Recruitment

We are currently looking for a graduate to join us in summer or autumn 2022.

We are a small but highly experienced team with a great selection of clients. Our work varies by sector but always involves complex, weighty and interesting issues that really matter to the nation, including education and social mobility, faith, healthcare, sport/culture and energy/engineering/science.

Many of our clients have been with us since the very early days of the agency being founded, which is a mark of the quality of our work. Just as important is the fact that our staff stay with us and develop flourishing careers.

All of our current team joined as graduates and have been with us for between one and 20 years. We are a friendly but extremely diligent team; we don't have a culture of long hours but we do expect everyone to graft at what they do. We are looking for someone who is happiest and most satisfied when they make themselves indispensable to a team.

This role, which is based in our office in London, would suit someone personable, intelligent, hard-working and ambitious for a successful career. Being interested in the world around you, reading and consuming news is a 'must'; a demonstrable interest in either data or social media (or both) is a bonus. Right from the start, drafting will be a fundamental part of your role so it is vital that you have an excellent grasp of spelling and grammar as well as rigorous attention to detail.

The person we appoint will receive high-quality, focused training and attention over a long period of time. We will seek to introduce you to clients and give you client-facing work as early as possible. We are looking to recruit someone eager to learn with the qualities needed to contribute to the development of our thriving business from Day One of their employment, whilst also understanding that full-scale training takes years, not weeks or months. If you have been considering the Civil Service Fast Stream, then this position will appeal to you.

As a small team, everyone is expected to muck in with the smooth running of the business and office. You will need to be the kind of person with the common sense and organisation needed for tasks like arranging meetings and video calls, as well as the social-ease needed for interacting with clients.

Application Procedure

Please send both of the following:

  • Your CV (no need for a covering letter)

  • A video, lasting between three and five minutes, briefly introducing yourself and telling us about your three favourite words and three worst words. We’d like to know the words you’ve chosen and why. Feel free to use Dropbox or similar if the file is too large to send.

And complete ONE of these:

  • Précis this podcast in 400 words: From cow to cup: The price of a pint of milk (24th May 2022).

  • "Net Zero: not enough?" Set out your view in 400 words.

  • Find out the most common first names among MPs. Tell us what you found and how you went about it. Use up to five charts or diagrams to set out your findings and up to 150 words of text.

  • Imagine you are an adviser to your current/former university. What advice would you give them on their use of social media, and why? Max 500 words.

To be clear, that’s three tasks in total: your CV and video, plus one of the choices listed.

Please email your application to Anna Lemer at anna@8hwe.com.

We will review applications as we receive them and will start conducting online interviews from now. Following the online interview, we will ask shortlisted applicants to spend two days in our office in London. All expenses will be paid.
